After the Romans withdrew from southern Britain in 410, the remaining population slowly adopted the language, customs and beliefs of the Germanic Angles, Saxons and Jutes. This was also the time when the design of the armor helmet took on the full facial cover with back of head and neck protection. Some variations had a mask that was sculpted to have a prominent mouth and nose. The Anglo-Saxons developed new cultural traits as well as adapted the Old English language. This language was a Germanic language and was different from what was previously spoken in Britain. As a costume, this Saxon armor helmet has a face mask that is reminiscent of the full facial masks we commonly see in plays except for the rounded top and the back of head and neck protective flaps.
