The Corinthian armor helmet originated in ancient Greece and was named after the city-state of Corinth. It was an armor helmet made of bronze which in later designs covered the entire head and neck. Slits for the eyes and mouth were provided. A rather large flap protected the nape of the neck. It also protected the cheek bones, which the Greeks adored. A variant of this Corinthian armor helmet gained popularity in Italy having the slits being almost closed. This Italo-Corinthian type remained in use until the 1st Century AD being used by no less than the Roman army. Although some elite soldiers wore armor helmets with various colored plumes, the foot soldiers wore helmets sans the plume. This prevents the opponent from grabbing the helmet to the disadvantage of the bearer. Plumes were originally made of horse hair and given color through the use of vegetable dyes but costume makers of today will find that using horse hair is very expensive and substitutes synthetic hair instead.
