Polybius, a Greek historian, does not describe in detail the helmets of the Greco Roman heavy infantry. On the other hand, archaeological findings show that the _Montefortino_ type was most commonly used. This Greco Roman helmet was usually of bronze finish and only had cheek-guards so as not to interfere with the soldier_s sensory capabilities. According to Polybius, the foot soldier adorned his helmet with three tall black or purple plumes to look taller and more intimidating to the enemy. Ceasar_s legions may have preferred a variant between the Montefortino and early Coolus helmet as they invaded Gaul from where they advanced to Rome during the Civil Wars. The red plume was more commonly adorned by the elite soldiers of the Roman army. The USC marching band_s costume is also paired with a helmet having the red plume. The apparent popular choice for plays and reenactments is also the helmet with the red plume. Important Features:
