During the Greco Roman era, the Roman Army had officers that were known as Centurions. Most Centurions commanded 60 to 80 men over the commonly believed 100. Senior centurions commanded cohorts or took senior staff roles in their legion. After the Greco Roman Era came the Imperial Era Centurions. They commanded centuries with higher precedence and rose to commanding the senior century and therefore the whole cohort. The very best centurions were then promoted to become centurions in the First Cohort. Julius Caesar is said to have promoted centurions for displays of valor. Other historians claim that promotions were based on such things as _ whoever is first to get over the enemies wall or through a breach.
