The Roman Army formation known as Legions did not come into use until the Marian reforms. This legionaire leather sword belt was part of the clothing worn by soldiers during the Republic and Early empire times. The Roman Army term for this Legionaire leather sword belt was a Balteus. The foot soldiers were typically equipped with the shorter Gladius while the cavalry had longer swords often times called Spatha.
