Beneath the chainmail or the metal armor worn by the Roman Army is a padded leather undergarment they called subarmalis. Its main purpose is to cushion a blow from the enemy and prevent any bones being broken or any internal bleeding caused by the rupture of organs. It is, however, the metal armor or the chainmail worn over the padded leather undergarment that deflects the higher percentage of the blow. The subarmalis can also be seen jutting out from beneath the armor from some paintings although no actual evidence has been recovered. While this costume is made from leather, the actual costume worn during those times were made from linen and wool. The wool is packed between the linen and then quilted. Another perceived function of the subarmalis is to protect the clothing and body of the soldier from chafing or soiling. Important Features:
