Vambraces were worn by the soldiers of the Roman Army to protect the forearm from injury as an integral part of the armor. They, vambraces are tubular in shape and were made either from leather or steel. Leather vambraces or arm guards were sometimes reinforced with longitudinal strips of hardened hide or metal creating the splinted look. These arm guards were still worn long after the popularity of the renaissance armor in Medieval Europe. Today, we see a variant of this arm guard in the NBA Basketball league worn by several players and are called wrist bands (short version) and arm sleeves (longer version).
