Commonly worn in pairs, greaves were popular Roman Army soldier metal leg guards. Some greaves are designed to just protect the lower legs but some are extended upwards to protect the thigh. Greaves are mostly worn by the heavy infantry troops of the Roman Army and were the main leg guards of the Greek Hoplites. The vastly equipped soldiers of the Marian Roman Army wore greaves on both shins reminiscent of the costume worn by Ancient Greeks. The costume of the Roman Centurions included altered greaves from the standard uniform of the Romans. The Imperial legionnaires did not wear greaves as part of their costume but the Centurions retained them. These leg guards eventually developed into a design that protected the back of the legs as well and were called full greaves. Even the Old Testament has referred to the type of armor worn by Goliath when he fought David as greaves. Important Features:
