There were experiments on metal arm and leg guards in the late thirteenth century and one of them is the schynbalds. Schynbalds are metal plates strapped over the chausses or a tight fitting garment worn on the legs. The schynbalds are metal guards that covered the front and outside of the shin but did not enclose the lower leg therefore it is not considered as a true greaves. The Spartan Army soldier mostly wore brass arm guards and greaves or metal leg guards that went all the way down to the ankles and up to the knees. These Spartan Army soldiers were more commonly known as Hoplites during those times. In the 15th century and the advent of gothic armor, the metal leg guards were instead strapped to fastenings on padded garments and greaves totally supplanted the use of schynbalds.
