The Gothic armies are usually composed of infantry soldiers and some cavalry but in the battle of Adrianople late in the third century, the Gothic Army cavalry was about 5,000 strong. The cavalry soldiers wore metal armor and metal leg guards or high greaves for protection. The two Gothic armies south of the Danube was led by Fritigen and composed of recruits from the Therving exiles while the second army was led by Alatheus and Sphrax whose contingent was largely recruited from the Greunthung exiles. Modern historians now put the strength of the Gothic army at 12,00 to 15,00 strong. Historians also believed that because of the number of cavalry men that took part in the battle for the Gothic army, this was the beginning of the dominance of the cavalry in the next thousand years. Wear this costume to a re-enactment of the Gothic wars but be warned that you must practice to mount a horse while wearing metal leg guards or high greaves or you might not at all.
