Thracians were exceptionally sought after as mercenaries because of their ferocity in fighting. On the other hand, the Thracians were also known for their love of plunder. Thracian mercenaries played a key role in the interaction between the Athenians and the Spartans in the Roman Army. The Odomantii were described by the Roman Army as expensive mercenaries. They were also occasionally hired by the Persians. They also found themselves serving the Republican Roman Army, Mithridatic and Diadocii armies. They comprised about a third of the Macedonian cavalry and about a fifth of the infantry. They later formed one of the key ethnicities in the Roman Army having about 20,000 troops at any one time. The Thracian chieftain had access to leather or metal armor cuirass and helmets. The ordinary soldiers did not wear leather or metal armor cuirass and greaves as they preferred to be light in battle and depended much on their skills and agility. Important Features:
