The Hypaspists were mostly armed as hoplites instead of phalangites or pikemen in Alexander the Great_s Macedonian army. In fighting they would be wearing Greek shield, leather armor cuirass or spolas, leather or metal body armor cuirass, Hoplites helmet, greaves and a sword. In traditional battles, the Macedonian Hypaspists were positioned in the flanks of the phalangite_s phalanx. Their main function was to guard the flanks of the large and rigid pike phalanx, an armored soldier with 18-22 ft. pike. The pikemen of the Roman Army were not particularly agile so the Hypaspists would prevent attacks on the quite vulnerable sides of the Roman Army formation. The Hypaspists were successfull in their jobs owing to their ability to conduct maneuvers and use tactics because they were equipped as Hoplites in weapons and armor. This is the costume you should wear if you were to present yourself in a costume party or play as a Roman Army soldier under the command of Alexander the Great. Important Features:
