About the middle of the 14th century, the breastplate of the Roman Army cuirass was made in two parts; the lower was adjusted to overlap the upper and held together by strap or sliding rivet. This added to the flexibility of the Roman Army armor or cuirass. The breastplate armor was then regarded as providing more protection than the chainmail. In the second half of the 15th century, the cuirass was occasionally superseded by the brigandine jacket, the forerunner of the flak jacket. Basically, the brigandine jacket was made of metal plates sewn into a fabric jacket. About 1550, the breastplate of the cuirass was known to have a vertical ridge called the tapul having near its center a projection point. This tapul was moved to the lower part of the breastplate and eventually the breastplate of the cuirass started to resemble a peapod hence the peascod cuirass.
