The chainmail armor or lorica hamata was also widely used in the Ottoman Empire_s army until the 18th century. The heavy cavalry and elite units such as the janissaries of the Ottoman Empire_s army were the primary users of this chainmail armor or lorica hamata. They spread out its use into North Africa where it was also adopted by Mamluk Egyptians and Sudanese who produced it until the early 20th century. The chainmail armor or lorica hamata was introduced to China when its allies in Central Asia paid tribute to the Tang Emperor in 718 by giving him a coat of _link armor_ assumed to be chainmail armor. However, it became one of the few military products that China would import from the foreigners because of its cost and difficulty in producing. The lorica hamata finally made its way to Korea where it was worn by imperial guards and generals.
