The second phase of the Hundred Years War in the late medieval period between France and England is known as the Caroline War. It was named after Charles V of France, who resumed the war after the Treaty of Bretigny, hence the Caroline War of the medieval period. The leather and metal gauntlet and armor wearing troops of Edward III of England refused an illegal summons by the French king and Charles responded by declaring war. He immediately set out to reverse the territorial losses imposed at Bretigny and was rather successful. His somewhat less aggressive successor, Charles VI made peace with a comparable son of the Black Prince, Richard II, in 1389. This truce was extended several times until the war resumed in 1415. It is also during the reign of Richard II that a group of dissenting Earls threw their leather and metal gauntlets in his presence demanding justice for their rebellion. Should you decide to wear the costume of Richard II to a costume party, be sure to act as an intellectual as that was how he was characterized by historians. Important Features:
