Designed to protect the throat, a gorget was a steel or leather collar worn as armor in the medieval times. It was used to protect the wearer from injuries by swords and non-projectile weapons. Most medieval versions of gorgets were simple neck protectors that were worn under the breastplate and backplate set. The leather or steel collar supported the weight of the armor worn over it and were equipped with straps to hold the heavier armor plates. In the Renaissance period, the leather or steel collar was no longer worn with a breastplate but were worn over the clothing instead. In the Battle of Coutras, Prince Henry (future King Henry IV of France) battled with the royal army of Anne, Duke of Joyeuse. The future King Henry IV emerged victorious in that war. This costume in leather is one of the more sexy costumes for women to wear to a party or reenactment these days. Important Features:
