The Royal or Catholic army under Anne, Duc de Joyeuse had trapped Henry_s (future Henry IV of France) Huguenot army on the night of October 20th 1587 in the Battle of Coutras. The 16th century saw the simple design of the leather or steel collar or gorget take on a more aesthetic improvement and were etched, gilt, engraved, chased, embossed or enamelled and were most likely very expensive. It is also in the 16th century that the leather or steel collar or gorget was no longer worn with a breastplate but were worn over the clothing instead. This was because Henry_s intelligence had failed him as he believed the Royal Army was still 20 miles away and did not cross the bridge. Instead, the Royal Army was 10 miles away and their light horse cavalry made a pre-dawn advance. Despite this, Henry IV and his troops fought back hard and emerged victorious in the end causing the death of Joyeuse.
