The term linothorax today is usually used to describe a type of upper body armor used by Greeks in the ancient and medieval times. In Greek, linothorax means _wearing a breastplate_. Based on the use of Alexander the Great in medieval Rome, it replaced the use of the bornze cuirass armor of the Roman Army Hoplites. The earliest record of its use was referenced in Book 2 of the Iliad by the poet Homer. The use of this cuirass armor by the Roman Army started around the late 6th or early 7th century. The high point of its use, based on vase paintings, sculptures and other arts, is around the Persian Wars. It continued to be used well into the Hellenistic Period.
