The Roman army of the mid-republic refers to the armed forces deployed by the Roman Republic in 300 to 88 BC. The Roman army formation in 300 BC was more of the manipular structure instead of the Phalanx formation that was used in the Early Roman army. The standard body armor at that time was the chainmail cuirass armor or simply known as lorica. The chainmail cuirass armor or lorica offered superior protection to bronze and was more flexible and easy to wear. The chainmail armor worn seemed to have double thickness on the shoulders for extra protection against downward thrusts by a sword or sharp weapon. It is reference in historical writings that only soldiers with the First Class of commoners wore a chain mail shirt. However, this was unlikely since at that time, the First Class served only as cavalry therefore it is more logical that heavy infantry wore chainmail armor. Important Features:
