The type of armor used by the Roman Army prior to the 1st Century is known as a lorica hamata. During the later part of the 1st century, the lorica hamata was starting to be supplemented by the lorica segmentata (plate armor). On the 4th century, the chainmail armor was reintroduced as the only standard-issue armor. The Legionary and secondary Auxilia troops were then the primary users of the chainmail armor. They were commonly made out of bronze or iron. The design of the chainmail was based on alternate rows of closed washer-like rings punched from iron sheets and rows of riveted rings from drawn wire that ran horizontally, producing a very flexible, reliable and strong armor. Each ring had an inside diameter of about 5 mm, and an outside diameter of about 7 mm. This modern chainmail costume is made of plastic making it light weight and very comfortable to use in costume parties and plays.
