During the Kofun period in the 4th and 5th centuries, Japan made very advanced iron plate cuirasses called tanko based on the Roman Army design. Roman Army plate armor and lamellar armor inspired Japanese armors were found in burial mounds where warriors were found in full suit plate armor. During the Sengoku period in the 15th and 16th century, large quantities of full suit plate armor were produce for the growing armies of foot soldiers. In the middle of the 15th century, around 1543, the Portuguese brought matchlock fire arms to Japan. The Japanese started to manufacture the Portuguese acquired matchlocks and the use of these firearms in warfare caused the gradual decline in the use of centuries old lamellar armor that the Japanese were known for. The Japanese armor makers then switched to using solid iron plates in their designs based on European armors. Eventually plate armors were the standard for samurai warriors. This would be an honorable costume to wear to a Halloween or costume party as the full suited warrior commanded respect throughout history. Important Features:
