The stagecoach or carriage is a type of horse drawn covered wagon that can carry passengers and goods. Usually, four horses strapped together is used to draw the spring mounted stage coach or carriage. Starting the 18th century, crude wagons to carry passengers between cities and towns in the United States first within New England in 1744, then between New York and Philadelphia in 1756. The first mail coaches appeared in the United States in the later part of the 18th century carrying passengers and mails and replacing the post riders on the main roads. Coachmen carried letters, packages and money, often transacting business or delivering messages for their costumers. By 1829, Boston was the hub of 77 stagecoach lines and by 1832 there were 106.
